Electronics, 1967, 2024. Works on paper by Hamish Robertson.
Growing up in England, I was immersed in a world of magazines. Weekend breakfasts were a ritual of flipping through newspaper supplements, while our home overflowed with back issues of publications from The World of Interiorsand Vogue to Domus and MacUser. These magazines captivated me, and as a teenager, I sought out titles that resonated with my own evolving tastes—domestic icons like The Face, i-D, and Select, to importing copies of Raygun, Grand Royal, and Alternative Press. The interplay of reporting on the cutting edge, reflecting on the past, and blending nostalgic elements with striking visuals was hugely influential for me.
After graduating from art school, I spent 12 years in the magazine industry, first as an art and production director and later as a design editor. My experience there deeply influenced my creative practice. Wanting to pay homage to this period—but also to distance myself from the era I directly knew—I chose to explore a time before my own. I acquired a full year of Electronics magazine issues, specifically from a period 12 years before I was born. The collages I’ve created are made exclusively from the pages of these issues, with no restrictions on how many works can emerge from each one.
